Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are challenged with a limited classroom library and limited adequate games for instructional social interaction. We are requesting some appropriate and engaging books and other classroom materials!

My students are third graders who are all on the Autism Spectrum.

They each come from high-need communities in New York and attend public school. Each of my students has their own personality that is endearing and I learn from each of them every day. My students enjoy math, reading, arts and crafts, and doing yoga. Some of our favorite learning time happens during instructional social skills when we practice new skills on how to appropriately engage and play with one another. My students have made much progress in this area as well as in reading and I am confident we can continue to progress. My students have many abilities and they are all eager to learn. They love hands-on projects and they are each very creative. We are currently learning about story elements, so having books they are motivated to read is important. Attending a public school in a high-need community, resources and funding are limited.

My Project

The resources I am requesting will dramatically impact the reading and socialization success of my students. The new books I have requested contain characters my students recognize and enjoy, and are also on their appropriate levels. Some of the books include Dora's Picnic, Curious George Pinata Party, and Morris Goes to School, all levels 1 and 2. With these new books my students will be able to actively engage in reading lessons and further their skills in literacy. I have also requested some new games for my students such as Candy Land, Scavenger Hunt for Kids, and Money Bingo. Teaching children with Autism how to play together, in a constructive and enhancing way, simple and interesting games that teach turn-taking and following directions are necessary. With the new games my students will be excited to learn how to play together in a way that will enhance their social skills and personal development. Other materials that will teach social skills include puppets and play food.

Supporting this project, donors will show my students that they are loved and important, as well as how many people care about their education and social development.

Helping a classroom in need will bring the spirit and love of learning to my students. This will impact my students on a broader level as their reading skills will increase along with their abilities to interact and communicate with one another. These reasons will help my students become successful now and in the future.
