My Students

"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase." -Martin Luther King, Jr.- Every morning we start the day off with "good things" where at least 3 students have to share a good thing that is going in their life. "Every student college ready"-motto..a goal we WILL meet!

I teach Science, Math, and Occupational Prep to special education high school students.

In my prep class, I teach life skills, job skills, social skills, and study skills. I believe in holding my kids to high expectations, because they are worthy of the expectation. They deserve the best! Most of my students are low income and their learning challenges range from mid-high functioning autism, specific learning disability to emotional and/or behavioral disturbance. They are eager to learn but are not used to being challenged due to lack of resources. They are the most amazing group of students even on the most challenging days. This is my first year at this particular school and I am learning that in the past they didn't always feel like the teacher had their best interest heart, they felt like leftovers (actual language used). It is my goal to make sure they feel and know that they are extremely valued and that they are worthy of the same respect as their general ed peers.

My Project

Where do I start? We are currently in the process of rebuilding our program and are in desperate need of a lot of things. This year our special education department has almost all new staff and we kind of inherited everything we have (and don't have) and were instructed that for the most part, anything we needed for our classroom we would have to purchase on our own. I am requesting school supplies because the majority of my students are low-income, on free and reduced lunch and cannot afford supplies. I usually buy some to start off with (pencils, paper, folders, etc.) for those that absolutely don't have it so the supplies I requested will help those students out tremendously. The sign language rug will be a great resource for us as I have quite a few autistic students who use basic sign or alternative communication and it will also allow students to communicate better with each other during class time and group projects.

This donation will change my student's lives so much because it will show them that people truly do care about them and that there are people out there who do want to see them succeed.

They are used to being told or made to feel like they are the students nobody wants to teach and that couldn't be further from the truth. The amount of confidence this will bring my students is truly invaluable. These resources are such an asset to my classroom as it will aide in class projects and materials.
