My Students
My 7th-grade students hail from all over Alexandria City, VA with backgrounds as diverse as a 48 pack of Crayola crayons. As we all remember from our own school days, those were the most coveted. As it happens, the most vibrant and beautiful images are made with such tools.
On any given day, my students speak two to three languages out of necessity.
Parents and students alike come to our district from all over South America, the Middle East, and parts of Africa to learn. They are vibrant, passionate, and curious about the world around them. Though they may struggle both at home and in school because due to financial and linguistic obstacles, they are resilient problem solvers. My students are soon-to-be change makers seeking a purpose.
My Project
A class library is a staple in every Language Arts room. However, due to a lack of funding, my students are left with limited reading options both in the classroom and at the school library; there simply aren't enough books!
Every week, my students are required to complete a reading log assignment which shows that they are reading at home for 20-30 minutes each night.
I encourage them to find a book they are genuinely interested in and will look forward to opening each day. Yet, they seem to be coming up short.
By funding this project, my 7th grade ELL (English Language Learner) students will have access to dozens of new stories. They will be able to dive deeper into empowering memoirs such as "I Am Malala," empathize in the pages of "Wonder," or discover other adolescent themes in the prose of John Greene. These books will not only elevate their personal literacy skills but also foster a genuine love of reading.
