My Students

Our sixth-grade students are very diverse and have a lot of personality! At this age, students are "awakening" their "adult minds" and asking all the questions they can. It is a lot of fun to work with students in this grade-level, because they have a lot of opinions and ideas, as well as curiosities.

At our school, we have lots of cultural capitol and we focus on working together and supporting each other as a community.

Many of our students tend to praise and recognize one another on a regular basis, and often, the "new kids" are immediately "folded" into the existing social structure, gaining a family of friends in an instant. It is a real joy to watch them interact and explore as they mature.

These kids are at the "top of the heap" this year, as they finish elementary school. They start the year with a lot of confidence and bravado. That turns to nervousness and worries later on, as they begin to realize they will have to learn a whole new school and daily routine the next year, as they enter Middle School! In June, they will cry, but we tell them to come back anytime!

My Project

These days, students are most interested and excited to read books in graphic format. I try my best to encourage them to read "the classics," but they just moan and groan and avoid those books that look so "old fashioned."

I'm ready to try giving my students more graphic novels, in the hopes that they will spark interest in reading the original classic literature later down the road.

I am also hoping to give them more access to science through the format they prefer.

With your support, I can get more and more students interested in the "classic" stories, as well as reading more nonfiction, which builds their background knowledge and helps add new vocabulary to their repertoire.
