My Students
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations because most quality adolescent literature is written for a white, middle class audience.
The majority of my students are African-American.
They come from low-income families in which reading for pleasure is an uncommon experience. They also have low lexile scores. Forcing my students to read from the English cannon that I grew up with-- which was written primarily by, and for white men-- is not going to be an enjoyable experience for them. I need contemporary literature that they can relate to!
My Project
The books that I have selected are written from the point of minorities, and they are quality literature. I have tested all of them in my class this year, and my students love them! Unfortunately, I do not have even close to enough for all my students. The books in this project will be used in my in class library. Students will be able to take these books home, and hopefully fall in love with reading.
I hope you will consider supporting this project.
It is widely held that students that read for pleasure do better academically. I am confident that this project will help establish a culture in my school in which reading is valued for reading's sake.
