The majority of my students are African-American. They come from low-income families in which reading for pleasure is an uncommon experience. They also have low lexile scores. Forcing my students to read from the English cannon that I grew up with-- which was written primarily by, and for white men-- is not going to be an enjoyable experience for them. I need contemporary literature that they can relate to!
