My Students
I've learned that teaching is a political job. Many policies (immigration, gentrification, healthcare, gun control, climate change, etc.) affect a student, a family, or a school in some form. It is a teacher's job not only to inform these students of these policies and mitigate their effects on out learning environment, but also teach the skills necessary for students to become critical thinkers and leaders in this ever changing society.
I believe that empathy is built in education.
It is built in our class discussions. It is built in developing social skills. It is built with reading about characters in novels who we can identify with. It is built in relationships that we have. It is built in the struggle of making mistakes and then trying again.
My students in Chicago have walked through many different paths of life to be where they are. Many continually suffer through poverty and trauma, and they see school as a safe place to grow into their identities. My aim is to provide students with access to books with characters they can identify with in order to validate their experiences. Thank you for helping my students grow.
My Project
Independent reading is a huge part of my curriculum. Daily, we spend ten minutes at the start of every class reading, and students also are expected to read twenty minutes a night at home. In my classroom, I try to foster a love of reading by providing books that mirror students worlds, as well as give them insight into the lives of others. Much of a student's ability to read stems from their stamina, and I aim to help them build it in cultivating a reading community.
Everyone is a reader, but some have not found their favorite book yet.
I aim to create a classroom library that is diverse, inviting, and inclusive in order to help them grow as readers.
