My Students

My students are a diverse group. They come from different social and cultural backgrounds, but you wouldn't know from the way they act towards each other.

My students are constantly surprising me with their knowledge and likes.

They are a constant joy to work with because I never know what I'll learn next.

When people look at the neighborhoods my students live in, they may make assumptions about what these my students like, for example. However, they will be surprised. For instance, a student who "appears" to be only concerned with today's pop music and culture will turn out to be a "hippie" with a love and knowledge of music of the 60s and 70s that equals a person of those generations.

My Project

In middle school and high school general music classes, often times students are "placed" in those classes when their "first choice" elective is full. These students are not interested, not engaged, and don't want to be there.

Turning a class like that into a guitar class changes all that.

Now, students want to be in class. They want to be engaged. They want to learn.

Such a simple thing can make a complete difference in not only the classroom experience but also in a potentially troubled life. A guitar class can provide an outlet for saying the things the student wants to say, but saying them with song.
