In an urban depressed area, opportunities for students are few and far between. Between dire poverty, a lack of funding, and an emphasis on test scores above all, music often is not a priority. In fact, at my school, There hasn't been an update to the curriculum in years. Practice rooms have been turned into offices and storage spaces. A choir room has been turned into a regular classroom. What instruments there are are in a state of disrepair. Things like this are happening all over the country--in urban and rural, wealthy and poor districts. With dwindling resources and opportunities, it becomes so important to offer whatever we can to further musical education. Music is literacy, after all. And teaching children not only the notes on the staff, but HOW to create their own music may inspire students to improve their lives.
