I love that my students are incredibly diverse. I teach Spanish and have beginner English-speakers as well as first and second-generation Americans in Spanish-speaking households. Students range from low-income to upper middle class and have many cultures represented at home. I've had nothing but great attitudes from the students and love being back in the classroom with them.
However, each is suffering from the effects of the COVID pandemic and distance learning.
Some have lost family members to the virus while many more are reeling from the social-emotional side effects that being isolated has caused.
I hope that each day I provide them with a safe place for them to learn and recover from the trauma we have all endured.
My Project
While my students have been blessed to read daily from my large classroom library of Spanish-language readers and literature, it is very difficult for us to read one novel together as a group. I would love to guide my students through several novels a year, to be read and discussed together.
Students would ideally have their own copy of the reader and together we could immerse ourselves in the culture of Spanish-speaking countries and learn grammar, spelling and syntax while enjoying a story.
Learning through story-telling results in a better comprehension of the language.
