FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. S.'s classroom raised $724
This project is fully funded
I teach at Hopewell High School. This is a large school with an increasing number of low income and exceptional children. Currently I teach 9-12th graders who are mentally disabled in various ways. We have a course of study which allows these students to gain a High School Diploma by meeting certain requirements. Two of those requirements are completing on campus job training and off campus job training. In the 9/10th grades, they focus on the "on campus" job training. The class I am requesting funding for is a 9th/10th grade lab class on the Occupational Course of Study. These students are required to create and run a school based business for this lab class as part of the "on campus job training". They will learn to work together, follow directions, take orders, be creative, meet deadlines and understand how a business works. This is to help prepare them for the world of work and the community job training they will receive next year. The obstacle I am facing is that there are no funds available to assist in the start up of a business. The students spoke last year about starting a coffee business. They will take orders weekly, selling to teachers and staff. They will brew the coffee, fill the orders and deliver the items. They will also have to market the business and keep up with the books. These students need as much real life experience as possible to assist in their learning of how things work, how to maintain a job and how to use basic skills in everyday life. With this coffee business they will be able to work on these things in an atmosphere where they do not feel threatened or unable to make mistakes. Hopefully they WILL make mistakes here, and with my guidance, learn from them so that they can go out into the community and become productive members of society with jobs, skills and the ability to apply the skills necessary in several different settings. Please consider assisting my class in the start up of this business which will build a strong foundation of employability skills for these special students.
For this project I will need coffee makers, coffee, creamers, sugars, stirrers, cups, lids, napkins and the energy of my students!
