My Students
I teach in a Title I elementary school in Western Pennsylvania. There are about 600 students in my school. I teach Title I reading, which means I work with the students who are struggling readers. My Title I reading groups work on developing vocabulary, comprehension (understanding what is read), and fluency (how fast and accurate).
This year I have introduced classroom pets to my students.
The children I work with are very dedicated and I love seeing them develop a love of reading.
My Project
This year I added classroom pets for my students. I need a larger cage to accommodate the chinchillas and provide them with ample room for living. They also need a hideaway house for sleeping.
The addition of a classroom pet is beneficial in many ways.
Having to take care of a pet builds a sense of responsibility in children. Children can develop empathy by caring for a pet, including an increased awareness of the needs and feelings of others. A classroom pet provides a crucial bond to the natural world that enhances your students' health and well-being. Studies show that the presence of animals tends to lessen tension in the classroom. The students can also read to the chinchillas and practice what they have been learning in school.
