This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of the best and most lasting things teachers instilled in me, as a student, was a love for books and literature. I remember my 1st grade teacher reading Matilda to our class and me begging my mother to get more Ronald Dahl books. I read Mother West Wind's Children in 2nd grade, Black Beauty in 3rd, and Doctor Doolittle in 4th (just to name a few). With my growing exposure to books and literature came a strong love for reading. With my growing love of reading came success in school.
The curriculum in today's classroom no longer focuses on great literature, but instead on small passages from the literature. The students spend one week dissecting the passage and then move on to another story. The emphasis is to improve the students' reading comprehension skills. However, reading only these passages has developed, in my students, a resentment towards reading. These brief passages do not spark the students' interest; a component I believe is vital for reading comprehension.
In order to increase my students' interest in reading, I have introduced literature circles into my classroom. We read books together as a class, or small groups, and discuss these books in details. The results have been outstanding! Students are begging to read rather than complaining that they have to read. I have been able to show my students that reading can be fun, and that they can learn at the same time.
In this proposal, I am asking for class sets of books so that I may provide additional reading exposure for my students. Through borrowing from other teachers and using my own money, my students have read George's Marvelous Medicine by Ronald Dahl and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. However, I need three or four more sets of books, because two books lasted only a few months, and I want my students to be able to read all year long.
