This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The students at our school enjoy learning and love coming to school. 100% of the students receive free breakfast and lunch as our students come from low-income households. Many of our children deal with various socioeconomic disadvantages; this affects their overall well-being in and out of school. For my students, school is a safe space where learning is limitless.
In our classroom community, my students benefit from our class gatherings on the rug.
The new rug I have requested will be used to create a warm and welcoming area for us to gather as a class family. I gather my students up every day on the floor for our whole-group instruction during our mini lessons. My third graders sit beside their turn-and-talk partners on the floor. In addition, my students will use the rug as a destination for flexible seating where they can work on independent learning tasks.
This rug will serve a variety of educational purposes, and the rug will become a warm and welcoming destination for students to learn, grow, and create bonds within our classroom community.
The current rug we have is very small, and only about half of my students fit on it comfortably. Some students have to sit uncomfortably on the hard tiled floor, and I would like to provide them with a more comfortable seating area for our whole-group meeting times where they feel more included!
