My middle school has over 800 students across three grade levels with over 75% being minority students, over 65% are economically disadvantaged students, and over 30% of the students are ELLs. While these statistics may be staggering for most people, these students do not let anything hold them back, least of all statistics.
Despite these challenges that my students face, they enter my classroom brimming with energy and with an unquenchable thirst for learning.
These students amaze me every day with their hard work and talent. Many of these students would never have an opportunity to study music and the arts if it was not offered within our school. Knowing this, the students come to class fully engaged and push themselves beyond the limits of what they thought they could possibly achieve. Any challenge I throw at them is met with a smile and determination to overcome it.
My Project
This coming school year will be the first year that my school will have band incorporated into the school day. Currently, the band is being offered as an after-school activity. In order to reach more students and to make the program accessible to students of all socio-economic backgrounds, we are adding it into our schedule. The course will be a year long and we want every student to have the opportunity to play in the group.
Our goal is to offer instruments on loan to the students at no cost to them.
This allows for students to be able to make music without worrying about the financial burden renting an instrument may put on their families. These clarinets are among the first steps in making our dream a reality for our students.
These clarinets will help build our woodwind section and ensure that we have instruments for all of our students. Each clarinet will go to one of the students that we have interested in playing clarinet in the band. Obtaining these clarinets allows those three students to participate in the band and help balance out the band by providing more players for our woodwind section.
I continue to work closely with my principal to make this the best program possible for our students. We have been able to purchase some music stands and other equipment, but we need these instruments to offer the all-inclusive program we are looking for.
