My students are energetic, polite and enthusiastic. They are also highly creative individuals with very positive outlooks on life. They help their fellow students without even being asked. They are readily accepting of any other individuals that transfer in and they are always open to new experiences. Even as we add the middle school to the high school students, they all have a desire to learn and grow as individuals that I have rarely seen in the 36 years I have been teaching.
My students are preparing to meet the world head on and their desire and ability to learn and participate are simply amazing, and my Civil Rights Team is getting geared up for a new year!
The community as a whole is very supportive of the students and district but the lack of money does leave room for some of the purchases we want to make.
My Project
I will have the seventh and eighth grade to add to the High School Civil Rights club this fall and almost all our videos are so old they are VHS. We are sorely in need of visually based educational tools to help students understand the movement and its impact on the people that experienced it. The information and examples shown in these videos will help prepare these students for a lifetime of standing strong in the defense of Civil Rights.
My students need Civil Rights information and history like in the DVDs of "Mississippi Burning", "Selma", "The Long Walk Home", and the "Butler".
They also need videos that present strong role models ("Wonder Woman", "Amistad", and "The Secret Life of Bees") for them to learn from and emulate because standing up for what you know is right is just as important as knowing what is right in the first place!
