My Students
Our school has a long history embedded in the community we serve. Students are excited to attend a school where many of their parents and even grandparents went before them. I have an exciting opportunity to continue building a STEAM Resource program as we enter year 2! When you walk into my classroom you won't see students sitting in desks diligently taking notes, instead, you'll see students brainstorming ideas, drawing images, building models, testing their solution, and more! I work with all the students in my building, kindergarten through fifth grade.
My students are spunky, inquisitive, and hardworking.
"I never knew school could be this fun!" a student shouted to a group member as they were working on a STEAM project. It is moments like these that push me to ensure that my students always have opportunities for hands-on, real-life learning experiences. My students are not defined by their labels, such as gifted, ADHD, ADD, or on grade-level, but instead, they step into my classroom to show off their talents and expand their imagination. It is wonderful donors, like yourself, that can help me to provide these experiences to our youngest learners!
My Project
Elementary school offers the foundation for all learning, and this includes the basics of civics and civic action. Our students are learning what it means for the United States to be a democracy, the fact we all have the right to vote, and how exactly this process works. However, these concepts can seem daunting to a student as young as 8 years old. That's where hands-on learning comes in! As a STEAM teacher, it is my job to engage students in learning through problem-solving. We ditch the worksheets and build what we know because their learning is demonstrated through doing. The Covid-19 pandemic has made it a little harder to conduct learning in this way because of sanitizing protocols, social distancing, and more.
With your help, I will be creating individual learning kits filled with LEGO and LEGO base plates for each of my students, which provides a safe way to learn during this pandemic.
With these materials, my students are going to learn about the process of voting and what it means to exercise their right to vote by solving problems. Over the course of 4 weeks, they will receive problems that they will have to solve through building. For example, a hurricane has hit our local voting precincts. How can you plan, build, and offer safe voting precincts for our district of 1000 people? Another problem they may receive is: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic we must now offer a new solution for safe voting practices. What does this look like? Build a model of a voting precinct that takes these factors into account for an estimated 500 voters. I can already see their learning come to life! Can you help us make this learning possible?
