My students range from 14 to 18, and many are learning English as a second language. Located in the sunny Mission, every day teen moms and babies come to school. Young women can start at our school while they are expecting and continue after their baby is born. Students continue with their academic education and learn about parenting skills, healthy baby strategies and useful community resources including those which help with jobs and money management. Until 2014, there was no library at our school.
Our students have very busy lives filled with school, homework, jobs and family responsibilities of caring full-time for an infant!
When they come to school, they are eager to learn both academic work, parenting skills and work related skills.
My Project
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and city planners regard trees as part of a city’s “green infrastructure.” More than half the available street tree sites in our city are currently empty. During the recent storms, many trees fell over. Students want to study why trees are important and then work with a local program that plants trees in our city.
Our school does not have a garden so students will walk around the neighborhood to sketch and study trees.
We need books about plants to study and sketch and cookbooks about edible plants and cultural recipes for teens. They will use the plant books to research reasons trees are important in the city. They will learn that trees produce oxygen, clean the air and reduce global warming, reduce flooding and water pollution, and create a physical and mental barrier between the street and the sidewalk, keeping pedestrians and children safe. Street trees also provide a natural habitat for birds and insects
Students will share their research information on posters. They will sketch trees and plants in their urban neighborhood and include these sketches on the posters. When the city program has a tree planting in the neighborhood, our students can volunteer.
Young moms also will learn about edible wild plants. They will use cookbooks to find yummy recipes to prepare. As young parents, they will learn about important natural components of their city, and they will be able to share this knowledge with their little ones in the future.
