We are a second grade class from Redwood City. Redwood City is a suburb located about 40 minutes south of San Francisco. About a 20-minute car drive away there is a working educational farm that provides kids with a full-day field trip of wonderful hands-on activities. Students can taste a root, touch a wool sweater on the hoof, and find out what a cow gives them. The tour will begin in a garden. There, students will learn the importance of soil, role play the six parts of a plant and find out what parts we eat. They will smell, feel, see and taste various herbs and vegetables. They will feed compost to a carrot, and then turn the carrot top into bacon by feeding it to a pig. From the garden the students will move on to discover the animals. The animals include cows, sheep, goats, ducks, chickens, horses, rabbits, and pigs. Students can feel a freshly laid egg and watch a 750 lb. boar eat his lunch. The students will discover how the farmer cares for the animals and what they, in turn, give to us. This farm tour program gives students a chance to see what they buy at their supermarket while it is still in the soil or on the hoof. One of the second grade social studies curriculum objectives is to teach children about their community. A science objective is to teach children about the Life Cycle of plants and animals. We even study the water cycle in our weather unit. I feel that a visit to Hidden Villa Farm will immerse the students in an active learning environment. Most children have not been to a farm and it would be a wonderful learning experience if we were able to make this field trip.
