Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students have never been north of the Trinity River that divides our fair city. They've never been on a plane, out of state or out of the country. Knowledge of other cultures, people and places will give them goals to push toward.

I teach in a densely populated urban school in Texas.

My students are mostly first and second generation Hispanic eighth graders. Many of them grew up speaking only Spanish and have parents that struggle to subsist. Family dinners and discussions of current events are in short supply. My goal is to expose them to the world of opportunities that exist outside of our city.

My Project

Growing up in small town Arkansas, I didn't know much about the world outside my window. When I picked up the book "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn", I was inspired to do whatever it took to travel and see the world. My goal for my students is to get to know other cultures and places. To this end, we spend a lot of time reading, writing pen pals and talking about current events. Scholastic Junior will provide my kiddos with a base to branch out into exploring what happens outside of the neighborhood we inhabit.

Please help us to explore the world we live in through media.

The short, high interest articles will help my students increase their fluency and make connections to other people and cultures.
