City Kids Turned Into Farmers!

Help me give my students a tangible connection to their food as they use the AquaSprouts Garden and Hydroponic Growing System to grow their own lunches.

My Students

As theater arts enthusiasts, my students are creative, passionate, energetic, and curious. They come from all over New York City to attend our specialized public school and represent a cross section of NYC's population.

These students are the CHANGE MAKERS.

As we explore the topics of environmental science, my students are constantly asking me WHY the world is facing so many challenges and HOW can they make things better. They are preparing themselves to change the world and I am honored to facilitate their learning.

My Project

Most of my students live in Food Deserts, low-income parts of New York City where there is limited access to fresh produce, and what is available is NOT affordable. The affordable food available is fast food, junk food, and unhealthy options. As performers, my students have a desire to take care of their bodies. As budding environmental scientists, my students want to take care of the Earth.

This project will connect city kids to their food, turning them into farmers and teaching them sustainable and accessible ways to eat well.

By planting herb and heirloom vegetable seeds and growing them in both the LAPOND Hydroponics Growing System and an AquaSprouts Garden, students will learn how plants connect to nutrients and water and how animals affect the balance. They plant the heirloom seeds, will monitor the nutrient levels and adjust the fertilizers accordingly, monitor the water quality to keep the fish alive, and document the growth of their plants. There will be both a large class-size hydroponic and aquaponic setup, and each pair of students will have a Penn Plax Aquaponic Betta Fish Tank to monitor and care for. And ultimately, they will get to eat their own freshly grown produce!
