Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students don't get very much sleep on our camping trips. They are too amazed by the starry night sky to go inside their tents and sleep. They literally spend hours gazing at the sky.
Many of my students have barely left their own city - let alone traveled throughout the mountains and forests of the Northeast.
They live in a dangerous, vibrant, loud, friendly, overpopulated, close knit, dirty city. Over eighty percent live in poverty and speak a language other than English at home. They attend a large high school campus where they must work extra hard to catch up to their suburban peers and prepare for college. Many of them support their families by caring for younger siblings or going to work. They are the most inspiring individuals I have ever known.
My Project
I created a school-wide club four years ago hoping to give my students the opportunity to camp, hike, ski, and enjoy the outdoors. We have climbed a number of mountains, slept in cabins, tents, and lodges, learned to ski, snowshoe and paddle, and gazed at a lot of stars. Since my students don't have any camping gear of their own, I have found ways to provide for most of our needs. Unfortunately, we go through a lot of disposable paper goods and water bottles. With the requested supplies, my students would be able to cook their own eggs on the camp stove, and wash their own dishes afterward. Since they will have a personal mess kit to use, we will create less trash and reduce our impact on the environment. Every hiker will have two water bottles to use so that they will stay healthy and hydrated on our adventures. My students will gain important outdoor skills that they will carry with them throughout their lives.
With these donations, my students will be able to prepare their own meals in the outdoors.
They will reduce their impact on the environment and learn about important outdoor principles, including the concept of "leave no trace." I hope their experiences in the outdoors will help them to be more confident and willing to try new things in the future.
