My students need an iPad Air 2 and the Printshop for Mac software to record, analyze, and design the population and behavior of the California Ground Squirrel.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"A squirrel! I see a squirrel!" My students see squirrels daily near our school and on campus. The excitement never ends. It's time for my students to think like a scientist and use their investigation skills to document the population of this wildlife rodent.
My school is in a unique location surrounded by the California Science Center and the Natural History Museum.
As partners with both organizations, my students have the opportunity to work first hand with scientists and curators. Throughout the school year, my students will be accompanied by the Curator of Ecology from the California Science Center on a walking field trip. The Curator will guide them in squirrel observation activities through exploring, documenting, and analyzing the distribution and behavior of the California Ground Squirrel in and around Exposition Park. My students will learn to record their observations and transfer the information into graph form for comparing and contrasting. They will learn to take digital photos, record video, design a model, and create a multimedia presentation from collected data. They will submit their ground squirrel findings to the Natural History Museum's citizen-science based research program to be cataloged.
My Project
The iPad will be used as a digital notebook to compile and analyze data--how many squirrels, time of day, the weather, season, location, behavior, and other pertinent information. During the squirrel observations, my students will use the iPad to keep a running tally of the information they collect. They will take pictures and video recordings to be used as visual evidence. They will save their information to the cloud for future access and further analysis. The Print Shop for Mac software will be used for my students to draw, illustrate, and design models of the squirrels recorded activity. My students will incorporate their drawings and recordings in a published digital book about Exposition Park Ground Squirrels.
Donations to my "Citizen Scientists to the Rescue" project will help my students easily record, document, and analyze data.
My students will be using the iPad as a tool and the Print Shop for Mac software as a canvas. They will truly become citizen scientists as they collect and submit scientific information to a national database at the Natural History Museum.
