Our school is located in an urban area where students come to school with limited background experience and knowledge. Over 75% of students experience school for the first time in kindergarten having not been enrolled in preschool. My students rely heavily on a strong classroom community foundation to form friendships and build confidence as they progress through their first year.
Each child brings something different to the table which makes our kindergarten room so unique and vivacious.
My students love to get their hands dirty (sometimes literally) as we explore our rigorous kindergarten curriculum. They attack each day with a curiosity and determination that is unmatched. What I love most about my kindergartners is their love of books! They love to smell books, touch books, look at the pictures, and most importantly...share them with others! My students astound me daily as they grow and progress into their own unique learners.
My Project
Imagine twenty-four eager eyes looking up at you ready to share exciting news from a long weekend. Now imagine those same sets of eyes struggling to peer around others in an attempt to see the speaker. Whispers rise from the back as students struggle to hear from the back of the dingy, outdated school carpet. By donating to this project, students will have access to a brand new, large, round rug that will be used for whole group activities throughout the day.
Seating students in a circle improves communication, listening skills, and builds community better than other forms of whole group seating.
In kindergarten, a majority of our year is spent practicing collaborative speaking and listening activities which help us to build a strong classroom community, or as we call it, classroom family. A circular carpet will allow students to sit on the perimeter of the rug able to see and respond to other members of their classroom family.
Carpet time is an essential part of kindergarten. We gather on the carpet to listen to stories, share our experiences, collaborate with others, and share our thinking. Please help us create a positive and collaborative classroom community through a simple change of seating!
