I was given a well-loved 'circle time' rug when I began to teach Kindergarten 8 years ago. My class has used this rug daily to explore, construct, and solve problems, develop trust, learn responsibility and respect, develop friendships, increase self-confidence and self-esteem, become better listeners, and have fun. I believe that circle time is invaluable for all of these reasons and more.
Circle time helps young children truly enjoy learning, as they strengthen personal relationships with peers and teachers.
What's crucial to a successful circle time? Aside from careful planning and a classroom management strategy, circle time requires a rug. Once upon a time, my classroom's circle time rug was vibrant and stunning, a colorful focal point of the room. But now, after many years, the colors have faded, edges are worn and tattered, stains cannot be fully removed, and the rug just plain looks sad and uninviting. Our classroom would benefit greatly from a new, fresh, colorful rug.
The rug I've chosen has sufficient, defined seating spaces for everyone in the class. Seats can be assigned to help maintain order, as well as reinforce positive behavior. Circle time rugs help to keep down the noise level, offer resistance to falls on slippery tile floors, and give the classroom warmth and a feeling of comfort. Lastly, a new rug would increase the aesthetics of our classroom, making it even more appealing and inviting. My students and I would be very proud of our new rug, we'd be careful, responsible, and respectful, making sure that our rug lasts beautifully for many years of future Kindergarteners.
