Circle Time is Fun For Everyone!
My students need a circle time kit full of movement oriented items that will allow them to get the sensory input their little bodies need!
Most people envision circle time as a group of children seated cross-legged on the floor, looking at the teacher leading the activity, singing or listening to a book, and having fun. But that is just not a reality in my classroom for preschoolers with special needs!
I work in a preschool classroom for children with autism spectrum disorders.
My classroom is located on an isolated site with 4 classes that only serve children with special needs. Because we are a preschool site, we do not receive Title I or ADA funding because those programs do not assist preschools. However, because we are a special education site, we do not receive the funding that other preschool programs receive such as HeadStart. This means that any "extras" we need in the classroom are not likely to be purchased by the school district and in the end the teachers donate their own money to purchase these materials.
We do circle time every day in my classroom but assembling a group of wiggly preschoolers into cube chairs and expecting them to keep their hands to themselves, their feet on the floor, and their eyes on the teacher is very challenging. My students require more movement than a cube chair allows for yet they also need movement that doesn't involve rolling on the floor and disturbing the student next to them.
The circle time kit that I am requesting contains movement equipment, weighted vests and pillows, a bean bag chair, fidgets and chewies, as well as music to encourage my little preschoolers to shake their sillies out! Sitting "criss-cross, applesauce" is OUT and moving is IN! These materials will allow my students to use movement to encourage participation during a classic preschool activity.
With this circle time kit, getting together for a group activity will be fun and painless and allow everyone to get the movement their body needs.
