Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Lacking a high school school arts program, my students have joined Cinema Sunset, our school's film club. Students come to learn about film studies and watch movies. But now it is time to put our knowledge to the test. Help them turn their passion into art.

My students are from a struggling city.

They face many issues at home and around town but our school is a place of safety and opportunity for them. As members of the film club (open to grades 6-12), my students are an enthusiastic bunch. Many are members of the school play and many find joy on the screen or in a book. They want to learn and they want to create.

My Project

These digital cameras will help our school's film club turn their knowledge about film studies (mise en scene, camera movement, and film analysis) and put it to work in their own films. Students will write movies from particular genres (drama, comedy, horror, etc.) and begin to create their own films. Students will have to write, cast their own stars, direct, shoot, and edit their films. Cinema Sunset members will be writing their films in the upcoming months. During our short week of Intensives (a 3-4 day period where our school puts things on pause and offers a variety of electives for our students to choose from) students will shoot and begin to edit their movies using these digital cameras.

My students do not have access to cameras such as these.

The only art program offered to our students when they enter high school is Drama Class. Our school plays allow our students to perform on stage, but we want to take it a step further and create a place for students to engage in filmmaking. These cameras will open up the first filmmaking program in our school's history.
