Cinderella: Rags to Riches!

My Students

Glass slippers to golden sandals, Cinderella is the original rags-to-riches gal! My students will read a variety of Cinderella tales from around the world before creating their own updated modern versions to share.

My urban middle school students, many English Language Learners, begin the year reading well below grade level.

Some are learning to read for the first time, after years of interrupted schooling. Others are still mastering English as a new language. School can be challenging for these students, but they work hard in our mixed grade Language Arts classroom to strengthen their reading and writing skills.

My Project

This collection of books includes Cinderella tales from India, China, Mexico, and Egypt. There is a Hmong Cinderella and a Middle Eastern Cinderella. The story is written in verse from the perspective of various characters, and it is retold in a Jazz Age setting. My students will read and explore multiple versions of the Cinderella story prior to creating their own urban version.

Creating an original piece of creative writing is difficult for many of my students.

They struggle with how to begin and where to go with an idea. Adapting a familiar story, like Cinderella, will build student confidence as they create wonderful written products to share with others. Students will play with dialog and description within the comfortable boundaries of this well-known storyline. Reading books from this collection will help my young writers take off!
