Our students come from low socioeconomic status and diverse backgrounds. Our school is one of the oldest buildings in the district and our staff is full of ideas. We are complimented constantly on the positive and convivial atmosphere we have here. We emphasize language and the arts with all students participating in a second language course as well as band, orchestra, choir, or visual arts.
We focus on including world applications across all classes and develop units that transcend the classroom.
They need opportunities to interact with the world inside the classroom. The kids are fun, kind, giving, and developing 21st century skills. They participate in service projects locally and give back to their community. They are a crazy-fun age group ranging from 11 to 14 years old. They are creative and love to have fun. Our staff is amazing! There is a positive attitude that suffuses the school. This is evident in our teaching and our school climate. Students know they have an advocate among our staff. We strive to make their education have value by participating in the International Baccalaureate program and encouraging them
My Project
I'm asking for a class set of the book "Cinder" by Melissa Myers along with an audio CD of the same. I will use the book in class for journals and literature projects. I use interactive notebooks in my classroom so students connect with the text by creating story webs or character biographies etc. For students who struggle with independent reading, the audio CD provides support by letting them follow along and hear the novel, eliminating frustration from a lack of access to material.
I currently teach a world literature unit around Cinderella and the universal motifs found in the tales various forms.
Students explore the tales from places like China, Japan, the Phillipines, etc. As they read, they look for cultural aspects and learn about the different incarnations of the fairy tale. Adding the novel Cinder to this unit would allow us to deepen the lessons on theme and what it is to be human. This unit focuses on both the literature pieces and building empathy for others.
