This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading about history may be interesting for some, but it may be difficult to reach all learners. There's something much more powerful about watching the events unfold before your eyes. It really drives the message home.

Our sixth grade students are hard working and eager students that consist of special needs and English language learners coming from low-income, impoverished families with challenging backgrounds.

They are kind, respectful young individuals who need frequent encouragement and stimulation in their learning. They try so hard to learn, participate, and to succeed despite their learning abilities. My students function at different levels and this makes it difficult for them to grasp many concepts of math. Our inner city school is 99.1% free lunch with very little resources.

My Project

Currently, our sixth grade students are learning about African-American History and the struggles that were endured in America. This activity will allow over 150 students the opportunity to go to the movie theaters to watch a powerful movie, and become historians as they step into the long history and struggles in Selma and Montgomery, AL. History is what shapes our world, and our students will be able to watch events that took place in history, reflect on their learning and make the connections necessary to promote positive change in their society.

As an addition to our unit, and only with your help, our entire sixth grade will be able to go to the movie theater to watch Selma.

The ability to watch the movie and reflect on their learning will help our students make connections to the history of the world they currently live in. This is a tremendous opportunity to educate our students and hopefully future generations on the perseverance and determination needed to change the society we live in.
