My Students

Our classroom is a world of literacy. Being the ELA teacher, there are over 50 eager learners in my room that are learning to be excited about reading. I often get asked by my students, "Can you recommend a good book to me?" or "I know you're busy, but can I please show you what I've been reading?"

I teach at a Title I school in Seattle, Washington with over 80% in the free and reduced-price lunch program and a high percentage of English language learners.

My students come from incredibly diverse backgrounds with most of them speaking multiple languages at home. The students in my class are hungry to learn. While learning may present challenges, they are excited to be in class each day. Our school is very much like a community within a community. My fifth graders that just promoted to middle school expressed sadness of leaving behind a family. My students don't just look to their teachers for learning, but also for guidance in life and growing up. My school struggles to make ends meet when it comes to having enough materials for everyone or getting updated curriculum for classrooms. We rely heavily on our community for support. Because of them, we are significantly better off. My students are lucky to see such kindness affect their lives at school.

My Project

The intermediate teachers at my school just attended the Read Side by Side's C.I.A. Units of Study training. As a team, we are planning on implementing this program into our literacy block next year. In order for this program to work, the students each need a copy of the book in front of them. This helps them to read along as they build listening comprehension and to physically be able to search for evidence in the text to support their thinking. Common Core wants students engaged in completing complex texts. For Earthquake Terror, each student will have worked on, and fully met, all the literature standards by the end of the book. The unit for Earthquake Terror engages students in reading the text, writing about the text, defending their thinking with evidence, and making connections to other texts. Earthquake Terror is the first unit of study in the C.I.A. program for fifth grade. If students have these books, we will successfully be able to complete the first unit.

Having Earthquake Terror in the hands of each of my students will increase learning for all of them.

I adapted the C.I.A. program to teach Tuck Everlasting in my class last year. First hand, I experienced the excitement and motivation it built in my classroom. It isn't a great feeling to get yelled at by your students every day, except when they are yelling about how much they love reading and don't want me to stop reading to them. It was the highlight of my year.
