Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
CHS is home to approximately 231 senior students residing in Compton and the impoverished areas surrounding. Considering all of the hardships that accompany living in a city like Compton, many of our students have had to progress through high school while navigating serious adversity. Poverty, high crime rates, and the prominence of gangs have contributed to an environment where education is not always an option, causing the majority of our students to be first-generation.
In spite of all of this, our team has worked diligently to ensure that our students pursue higher education, amassing approximately 1300 college applications!
In order to celebrate our students who have worked so hard to overcome their educational barriers, we want to put together an event that recognizes their exceptional achievements. We want to put together a decision day where our students' post-secondary plans are commemorated in the most memorable way. With games, a photo booth, food, and college readiness baskets, we hope to give our students motivation and memories that they can cherish forever.
With all that being said, we are asking for donations to make our decision day possible. In particular, we are requesting materials to assemble college readiness baskets that will be raffled off. Many of our students will be moving away to school in the fall, and they cannot afford the things that are necessary for a successful transition to college. With your help, we can supply them with dorm essentials, kitchenware, and even electronics. We want to alleviate as much stress as we can during our students' transition to college, and we think readiness baskets would be the perfect opportunity to do so. Ultimately, your donations will be directly impacting a diverse group of first-generation students in need. Centennial thanks you!
