As a teacher in a low-income/Title I school, my students are faced with challenges both inside the classroom and at home. Many of my students come from single parent households, shared homes, and some are unfortunately homeless. Our school is 100% free breakfast and lunch, and the neighborhood has a reputation for crime. I came to this school because I knew I could make a difference, and provide these students with the love and stability they need.
Our students are expected to spend 1 hour and 30 minutes on the computer per week completing the I-Ready curriculum.
The problem is... we have 5 computers, and one hour a day to allow them on. We have two computer labs, which are mostly used for computer based testing.
My Project
Our school is extremely limited when it comes to resources, and many of our students don't have computers at home, so any online work must be completed at school. Having 5 additional Chrombooks in the room would make our goals much more achievable. Right now, a computer rotation schedule is running my life and my classroom because I am struggling to get every student on for at least 30 minutes per day. This causes my students to miss out on important instructional time because they have to meet a district-wide goal that we don't have the resources to accommodate. If we had these Chromebooks, I could put all of my students on the computer for half an hour a day and not a single student would have to miss a lesson. It would be an absolute lifesaver!
