Chromebooks: Helping My Young Scientists to Shape the Future.

My students need Chromebooks for daily use in the science classroom.

My Students

My 6th grade students are eager to engage in hands-on science activities and come from very diverse backgrounds. The majority of them struggle greatly in school, and are very low readers. Some of my students enter my classroom having never been in an English speaking country before, and therefore have no grasp of the English language. Some of my students are mainstreamed into my classroom and have special learning needs. I do so many things to get and maintain my students attention so that they can learn what I need them to learn. At times, the students probably think I'm crazy because of the lengths that I'll go to in order for them to focus and learn.

For example, in teaching them the importance of writing out procedures for the scientific method, I ended up covered in peanut butter and jelly while following their instructions for making a sandwich!

As engaging as my lessons are, I need to prepare these young minds to be functional in the 21st century. Most of them come from homes where technology is not a part of their daily life, and our school just cannot fully support funding technology.

My Project

When I incorporate the few Chromebooks that the school has into my science class, the students thrive. They use them in stations, do their own research, web quests, take quizzes, and participate in small group and whole class activities. I want to be able to utilize the Chromebooks more frequently, and to be able to have more students using them at the same time. Right now our use of Chromebooks is limited, and that is a disservice to my students.

All of my students, from my newcomers and English as a Second Language students, to the students who are advanced and need extra enrichment, benefit greatly from using the Chromebooks.

I am excited as I watch my students develop independence in their acquisition of science skills, and also am proud to see them collaborate with others through their use of technology.

Additionally, we are planning to work with North Carolina State University students who will come to my classroom to teach coding and applying scientific principles at the same time, but we need the Chromebooks in place first.
