My Students
My students make up the dual language cohort for the fourth grade at our school, an innovative new public school with an ambitious mission: to provide a safe and nurturing environment where students can thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. Our school emphasizes project-based-learning, environmental stewardship, and a love of the arts, and my students dive deep into all of this learning, in two languages!
My classroom is a portrait of the modern United States, with a variety of nationalities, home languages and family histories.
Instead of dividing my students, however, their differences bring them together. Every day in Morning Meeting, 2-3 students share something from their life- a recent anecdote, an art project, a gift from a far-away grandparent. The interest and respect my students give to their peers is lovely and inspiring to see.
My Project
In our classroom, technology is used strategically to provide differentiated support for students who need it, and to challenge students who are ready for more! We currently have 8 Chromebooks from previous DonorsChoose.org proposals (thank you!) and 4 more will allow our class to break into smaller, more differentiated groups. This number will also allow for pair programming, which, aside from being an essential part of our new Computer Science curriculum, is also a collaborative activity that can help students learn how to work together!
Whether students are typing up historical fiction about the Revolutionary War, designing a maze with a partner, or doing Math exercises at their exact level, these Chromebooks will help meet the needs of a diverse group of students.
