Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a public charter school in Ohio. Our attendance sits around 375 students K-6. Our 4th grade consists of two classes of around 50 students. These students are mainly Hispanic who receive ESL services, a large African American population, with a few Somalian, Caucasian, and Asian students as well. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Theses students are so eager to learn, but they need additional resources to take their learning to the next level.
The fourth grade students are dedicated to learning, but have very limited supplies.
Many of the students do not receive any help at home. Some of my students have even told me they don't have any books at home! I want to provide these students with as much as possible while they are at school, because of their lack of resources and support at home. These donations for supplies will help me to teach and prepare my students for their future education and lives.
My Project
We started the year with four aging classroom computers, and we have had two stop working. The two computers we do have "freeze" on a consistent basis which makes it much more difficult for the students to finish their work. There are countless resources available on-line for my students, but without computers, they don't have access to any of them.
These Chromebooks will be used on a daily basis in the classroom to enrich and engage the students in various subjects.
They will also be a vital tool for research projects, writing essays and papers, and practicing skills across the curriculum. We will also be starting Accelerated Reader (AR) soon and students will need access to computers in order to take AR tests and be motivated to read as much as possible.
Standardized tests are administered via computer. The more exposure the students have to using the computers will make them more comfortable and successful when they are taking these tests. It is important to incorporate technology into my teaching so the students are prepared to use it as they get older.
