My Students

“Fairness does not mean everyone gets the same. Fairness means everyone gets what they need.” My students are like many students in this nation. They come to school to learn, but they struggle with leaving the problems of their world outside the classroom. They want to be successful in life and in school, but at time they don't know how. As they approach their last years as "children", they are trying to figure out how they will define their lives success, and I want to help them with this.

They are lively, fun, urban, struggling, successful, advanced, behind, overworked overwhelmed, stressed, and child-like.

They are faced with challenges in and out of the classroom, but I am looking to make their experience in my classroom creative, meaningful, and possible. I want to ensure they have the things they need to be successful.

My Project

When people think about working at a 1:1 school, they think about the amazing access to technology that transforms learning, and I must admit it is that. Working at a school where every student is provided with a chromebook during their freshmen year should open up amazing educational experiencing for every single student. BUT what happens when students crack the screen on their device and can't afford to have it fixed? What happens when a student loses his/her device during freshmen year? What impact does this have on the next three years of their educational experience?

Through the use of technology, students can have a more enriching and equitable educational experience.

However, when a student is sitting in a classroom where they are one of few students without a device, their educational experience changes. They can't use the vast resources provided via the internet to assist them in required research projects. They can't access supplemental videos meant to give them a heads up on understanding material.

This project will provide my English III and ACT prep students with a device to use inside class, so they don't get behind. Junior year is one of the most difficult years of a student's educational experience, and lack of access should not make it more difficult. Thank you in advance for you ensuring that my students have everything they need to be successful!
