I teach third graders in a high poverty public school. My students come to me with varying abilities, attitudes, and backgrounds. Our classroom is authentic, supportive, rigorous, and engaging. Every student in my classroom has a unique voice and everyone in the room must respect it.
It is my belief that all children are capable of learning if strongly supported and encouraged with love and enthusiasm.
I believe if a teacher creates a learning environment with high expectations of achievement that is supported by the school and community, students will develop a positive attitude and begin to perform to and beyond the expectations despite any challenges they may face.
Creating a community is essential to taking risks and deeper learning. I care about my students and they know it.
I push my students to meet and go beyond my high expectations even though they may have been conditioned to believe they cannot meet them. Taking time to know my students, not just as learners, but also as people has helped to create a sense of belonging in each student. No matter what obstacles they face, they strive to be their best every day!
My Project
The use of Chromebooks would be a daily occurrence in my classroom. Our school has adopted a math curriculum that has a computer component that goes right along with it. The computer program has students work at their own pace and reinforces topics that have been taught during class. However, we do not have any computers in our classroom. If we had a classroom set of Chromebooks, my students would be able to have an engaging center activity that perfectly complements our math lessons. In addition, our mandated, end-of-year, state testing has essay portions on it that requires my students to type multiple paragraph answers. This is so stressful for them as they do not have strong keyboarding skills. With Chromebooks my students would be able to have daily typing practice which in turn would result in higher test scores.
In addition to the above, a classroom set of Chromebooks would open so many other wonderful opportunities to my students!
They would be able to learn to code, do research, work on projects, and be introduced to navigating this world with current technology.
In this technology literate world, any interaction with updated technology will increase students' academic achievement as well as their desire to learn and use the new technology. By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve engagement and skills, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
