My students at Arthur C. Butler Elementary come from very diverse backgrounds. There are 28 students. This includes 4 GATE students, 7 English Language Learners, and 9 Redesignated English Language Learners. There are eight languages that make up my class. Because of this diversity, each child has phenomenal ideas to share during team building and other group activities. I taught this class last year in 4th grade, so I know my students' academic strengths very well already. The words that describe them are enthusiasts, ambitious, and curious. And when one walks into our classroom, he or she can easily find evidence of these qualities.
This class inspires me because they are incredibly passionate about something, whether it is karate, dancing, singing, science, standing up for something that they believe in, and most of all, learning.
They are respectful, kind and considerate to each other and everyone around them. They are our future leaders!
My Project
This year, our school is considered Title I, which may help in providing programs to some of our underprivileged students. However, a large number of my students don't have access to a computer at home and school is the only place for them to access one. In my 5th grade classroom, we will be focused on NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) this school year. Students will generate notice and wonderings using a phenomena, create an experimental path, use knowledge learned from research, and write model statements with evidence and explanation. With these Chromebooks, students will be given the opportunity to work together in teams, which will further enhance their curiosity and love of learning. Furthermore, they will be able to access Mystery Science online, which is a science program adopted by our district. In addition to this, students will write different types of essays (informational, narrative, and opinion) on google docs or classroom. My students already know about the writing process. Because writing takes time and effort, it helps when students are able to write their rough and final drafts on google classroom. During this process, I can assist students that are struggling in particular areas. This will help drive my instruction!
With your donation, my students will not only be engaged in science and writing and possibly other subjects, but they will gain self-confidence for being in charge of their own learning.
I strongly believe in the student-centered teaching approach if we want to create future leaders who will change this world in a positive way.
