Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our math students are in middle school. Many have shared their dreams for the future and I know they will need 21st century math skills and a college education to get there. They hope to be architects, doctors, computer programmers, and animators. Some even dream to one day work in a non-profit capacity helping families or animals.
I teach at a Title I middle school where seventy-four percent of our students qualify for free or reduced-rate lunch and many come from very technology-poor homes.
My students love hands-on projects and topics where they can discuss issues and express opinions. My school lacks the resources to meet my students’ needs and I am concerned that their lack of exposure will not prepare them for the rigors of high school and college. My goal is to create a classroom environment where students are engaged in the learning activities to improve their mathematical comprehension and presentation skills.
My Project
A classroom set of Chromebooks with a 1:1 ratio will greatly improve my students' abilities to understand pre-algebra and geometry concepts. The curriculum that our school adopted has many learning activities that are available online. However, many of my students don't have a computer at home and my classroom has less than half the total Chromebooks needed. With a classroom set of Chromebooks, the students will be able to utilize all of the online activities while in the class.
Specifically, the students will model math using online applications.
The students who struggle will be able to practice and relearn missing skills by participating at their own learning level with online resources. They will be able to track their progress and be motivated by their individual growth. Finally, the students will be able to submit assignments to me and share them with each other digitally. This piece is important because we are going to use technology to increase the math dialog among the students in much the same way ideas are shared within the modern workplace.
More than half of students from low‑income households
