My Students

"...if we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow." - John Dewey Technology is no longer a privilege for the wealthy or brilliant. It is a tool that every single child has the right to learn how to use.

Our school is nestled in a small, tightly knit military community.

Many students have a home situation with the tools that support success at school, but still many more do not. In any given class, there are at least 5 students who do not have consistent Internet service, much less a computer for school use. These very students are the ones who need the most support to help them see a path to college and career. Their use of technology is sporadic and disconnected from most classroom experiences. They don't get to use technology often enough to count on it as a daily tool. They lack the problem-solving skills that many students can only get from learning how to use technology as a tool - a tool that they can 'reach' for whenever needed. These students may never have the financial and family support that their peers do, but that does not mean that they should be denied the chance to succeed.

My Project

Envision 25 high school students automatically logging on to their cloud storage with a Chromebook for the day's assignment as they take their seat. They started the essay in class yesterday and were able to open it at home, at the library, or even on their phone or tablet to continue working on after school. Once they have their document open, they begin peer editing by simply moving seats. Editors are able to post their comments directly on the document. There is time to complete two peer editing sessions before the authors sit back down at their desks. You can hear a pin drop on the floor as they read the comments their 'editors' have left. Then the typing begins as students begin to revise their writing. There is no need for me to even interfere. They are so engrossed with the task that there is no talking during the writing session. Revisions are made in the classroom, and I instruct the class to read the paper aloud to someone at home for a final editing session,

It's easy for teachers to teach the students who have it all.

You know there are resources at home that will help you make learning meaningful. The real challenge in education is reaching out to those students who don't have it all. Many education publications talk about the student-driven classroom - all activities should promote the student. Chromebooks for Kids will do just that - equip every student in my class to use technology as a tool to lead them to success.
