I work in a very special area of Portland, Maine. Our student population is hungry, homeless, or both. They also live with a wide variety of disabilities ranging from near blind to a barrage of emotional, traumatic, and learning disabilities. This population of students are not in situations that lead the way to optimism, opportunity, or great leaps to advance their quality of life.
Regardless the reality of their situations, many come to school for a hot meal, to learn, to succeed, and for the positive relationships formed in our school.
Our students are overcoming daily struggles to be present during the school day. It is my obligation as a teacher to create the best possible environment with diversifying access to content in education. In this effort to insure all students can access education we have limited technology. We need Chromebooks connect students to the educational resources.
My Project
Our school is not a one student to one computer environment. Two Chromebooks would allow us to have three people on technology at once. We hope to do this until all of our students have complete access to the internet.
I hope to advocate through DonorsChoose.org to have increased access to online resources.
We used the internet to explore the news and have classroom discussions. We access the internet for IXL, Khan Academy, Ted talks, online books, Google classroom, the whole Google platform, and promoting increased practice of all standards across the academic spectrum. Regular schools have the tools and our 100% Special Education population needs more tools to achieve. Here we have a teacher and a room full of students that want to learn. Thank you for taking the time to read about our and and our project to graduate all students.
