Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My Environmental Science Inclusion classes are composed of curious, enthusiastic, and eager 9th graders. The majority of our inclusion students are bi-lingual and come from a diverse array of backgrounds. Consequently, the methods in which they learn best are also just as diverse. That is why it is up to me to figure out which learning technique will suit them best!
Despite my students' individualities and diversity, I have observed one thing that they all have in common-they all love using technology!
I am hopeful that I can incorporate the usage of more technology into our Environmental Science lessons in hopes of creating better achievements in the students who need it most. Not every student will become a scientist, but all students need to become scientifically literate- and be successful at it!
My Project
Many of our Environmental Science lessons involve documenting data and interpreting cause and effect relationships. For example, what is the relationship between water acidity and plant growth? Or global carbon dioxide sequestration levels and atmospheric temperatures?
After my students record their results during an experiment, they must represent their data in a format that can reveal patterns and relationships.
By having an extra Chromebook in the classroom, my students' results can be better analyzed and communicated to others. Raw data can have such little meaning and a major practice of scientists is to organize and interpret data through graphing or statistical analysis. This type of analysis is what brings out meaning and most importantly - RELEVANCE to my students!! In addition to input data analysis, the Chromebook will also be used for research projects (endangered species!) and lab report writing.
