My students face challenges in all areas of their lives. They have been diagnosed with behavioral, emotional or learning disabilities and most come from homes where meeting their basic needs is a daily struggle. Our neighborhood faces many of the challenges that most inner cities face. There is poverty, violence, crime and gang activity that surround my students daily. My students are creative, bright and determined. They are the most hard working and motivated despite their home circumstances.
My students are funny, endearing, caring and strong despite having persevered through events that most would find unimaginable.
Yet, they still come to school everyday hoping to better themselves.
They come to school seeking academic and emotional growth, but they also look for a nurse, a trainer, a nutritionist and a confidant. They often see their peers as "family" and the classroom is their safe place- a place where they can be themselves. As their teacher, I strive to feed their brains, body and soul with knowledge and the tools they will need in the outside world.
My classroom is self contained and consists of students in grades 9-12 in which I am responsible for teaching all academic subjects. Being a special education program, all of our students have individualized education plans and are functioning at different levels.
Having Chromebooks available for classroom use would enable me to help our students to foster excitement for learning by allowing me to provide them with projects that are both interesting and educational.
Chromebooks would also help me to differentiate instruction so I can help each student reach their full potential. Please help me provide my students with the technology they need to be successful and better prepared to become functioning adults in our society.
