Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

The excitement that the kids showed after I asked them to be a part of this was heartwarming. A few students expressed interest in obtaining Chromebooks for the class. Gabe, Mike, and Jose wanted to take the lead on this project to help gain technology for their class.

We recently began growing Wisconsin fast plants and wanted to create time lapse videos of their growth. With a lack of technology in the classroom, this became a problem. As we brainstormed ideas for how we can solve this problem, the students also mentioned that we could do time lapse videos of the garden as spring approaches. As this idea began to take foothold, we were discussing sustainability as a class and how we can spread the word to the community. A few students had the idea that we could document the progress of the school garden to show the community that sustainable farming could be done on a small scale in the extra space near their homes. The students also had the idea to promote community gardens as both sustainable and educational tools for the community. In order to spread these ideas, the students decided that Chromebooks would introduce the proper technology into the classroom to make this project a reality.

By allowing students to interact with the Chromebooks and connect wireless to the TV, they will be able to share their work collaboratively and work together on group projects. Also, the students have done the research on the products that they wanted and determined based on specs, user reviews, and professional reviews which would work best for our class. By providing students with technology in the classroom, they will be preparing themselves to do research and work together in a manner much more suitable to the 21st century learning skills.

In Their Own Words

The goal we are trying to accomplish is to get a proper education with technology that we can count on. As the world around us takes a step forward with technology, schools are left in the dust. With the Chromebooks, we are planning to start a blogging project about the school garden that we help maintain. Through the process, we will be planting different vegetables for harvest at the end of the year.

Our teacher taught us how to code in order to help achieve donations from the Microsoft Choose to Code initiative. He also has helped to encourage us to use crowd funding to help achieve our goals of getting more technology in the classroom. To do our part, we will be getting the garden ready from winter and planting different vegetables. Once we have done this, we would like to document the growth of the veggies and what we are doing to help them grow.

This project is important to us and the school community because we want to show everyone that if 8th graders can create a sustainable community garden; then, adults and families can also do it. By creating a blog with Chromebooks, we can send our blogs to Mayor Mark and he can post them on Twitter for all of his followers and we can inspire the community to start their own gardens. If we want to spread the word about sustainable foods, we need to be able to show the world that it can be done.
