My Students

It is very challenging to create a 21st century learning environment without access to the Internet. As a Google Certified Teacher, I have the training to provide a meaningful web-based curriculum where students develop skills essential for success in the 21st century. We just need the devices.

My students are sixth graders at a public school in the East Bay area of California.

Although they live in a fantastic town and school district, the technology in the school is really lacking. Outside of a computer lab they get to visit only one hour a week, the computers, software, and other technology available to them is relatively ancient. They need more technology tools in their hands and in their classroom. We're looking to DonorsChoose to help us get those tools. Our school district has adopted Google Apps for Education (GAFE), a suite of online software resources that students will be using for creativity and collaboration throughout their K-12 careers. The Chromebook has a long battery life (8 hours) and a quick boot time (10 seconds). It's the ideal laptop for students using GAFE and any other online resources.

My Project

The use of Chromebooks in the classroom will help my students develop skills in collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and much more. Students will be using them to research and access multiple sources of information from a variety of perspectives. They will learn how to critique their sources, synthesize information, develop their own thinking based on evidence, create multimedia projects and share their work with a larger audience via the Internet. It will allow them daily access to free online resources and web tools that they may only have had access to in their weekly visit to the school computer lab. These children are growing up in a tech savvy world where communication is evolving every day, but schools continue to lack the funding to make technology a priority. It is up to educators to try and make these technologies available to our students, to embrace 21st century learning and everything that comes with it.

Schools are often finding themselves behind in adopting new technologies, and students are suffering as a result.

With the implementation of the Common Core State Standards, students will need this increased online access. The new language arts standards require students in sixth grade to create multimedia projects, collaborate with peers online and be able to develop arguments supported by evidence from a variety of sources. Chromebooks would help them develop these valuable skills.
