Chromebooks for College Readiness: Enhancing Literacy Through Technology
My students need Chromebooks to enhance their reading, writing, and research skills; they need the Interactive Whiteboard to see how these skills are acquired.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is made up of about 350 students that represent the culturally diverse population of New York City. Our students bring so many talents into our school that it would be impossible to name them all in one sitting. They are creative, enthusiastic, and determined young men and women who have big dreams about life after high school.
I am deeply inspired by their resilience.
In spite of the obstacles that they face at home and in the streets our students continue to come to school. They come in well before first period starts and they often stay long after the last period has ended - why? Because as one of my students aptly stated earlier this year, "I want to get my family out of the negative cycle of poverty. I want to change our future."
Out students work hard and are eager to do so because they understand that the value of education extends beyond the classroom. Their drive motivates us to provide them with the very best educational experience we can offer.
My Project
Literacy is the foundation for academic success. However, many of our students are reading below grade level the moment they enter our school. To meet this challenge I have found ways to support their reading growth by helping them obtain their first library cards, designing personalized learning experiences, and creating partnerships with parents. One area that I am hoping to explore is technology. There are many online reading programs that my students can benefit from but we do not have computers in the classroom. I am requesting 4 Chromebooks to set up a Computer Station in my room.
At this station students will be able to develop their reading skills through an online program, practice their research and writing skills, and in the process become one step closer to being college ready.
I am also requesting the Interactive White Board to show students how to develop these specific skills. I can show them how to navigate through websites for research purposes (especially the online databases provided through our public library system), how to use Google Docs to write a properly formatted paper, and how to earn Lexile points through the online reading program.
By using technology to enhance literacy I am hoping to provide my students with all of the support they need to be ready for the challenges of tomorrow.
