My students need 4 Google Chromebooks with a Chrome education license to easily collaborate with classmates on projects and respond to comprehension activities during independent center rotations.
I teach a group of bright, energetic, enthusiastic and creative 2nd grade students that have found their love of reading. We are a Title One school located in the Ocala National Forest where over 80% of the students are on free or reduced lunch. In my classroom, I have students that are English Language Learners, special needs ESE students and general education students. We have worked together to create a classroom in which every student is included in lessons and activities. Reading and comprehension skills are paramount as my students start to transition from learning to read to reading to learn. The majority of my students have extremely limited access to books and technology outside of the classroom.
Learning through technology is fun yet challenging, and will create a spark that ignites a lifetime love of learning.
My students would benefit from current technology in the classroom which would allow them to blog their reading responses in real time, record themselves read and play it back to increase fluency and provide a way to collaborate with classmates on projects using Google Drive. They can be active participants in class while learning the technological skills to ensure future success.
My Project
Technology has become the cornerstone of success in our modern global community. I believe it is essential that each and every student be provided the opportunity to keep up, regardless of their socio-economic status. My students live in a rural community and have extremely limited access to technology beyond what is provided in my classroom. I wish to enhance their early learning experience and introduce them to the technology that will be so important for their success and the overall success of their generation.
Chromebooks can be used in all aspects of literacy development no matter the student's educational level or background.
The Chromebook technology has proven itself to be easily accessible to students regardless of their previous technology experience. I have observed that students are motivated to become more fluent readers by being able to record and then hear their own voice reading back to them. They perform better on comprehension assessments when they have a choice about how they respond and they push themselves harder when they collaborate with classmates. I prefer using Chromebooks to enhance my students' learning because they are light weight and user friendly and have proven themselves a versatile educational tool.
