Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

About My Students

The courageous group of students submitting this project, are members of BMS Computer Science Initiative. Alfredo, Lynasia, and 10 other students are 7th and 8th Graders; who will be using aspects of coding in conjunction with Project GUTS, to engage in scientific inquiry by investigating topics of interest to their local communities through the lens of complex systems.

TCB Middle School is a Title I school located in urban Richmond, Virginia. Currently serving over 700 students, of many diverse backgrounds. As where, 100% of our students relieve free breakfast, and free lunch. Our school mission is to provide all students with a rigorous education, in a safe and nurturing environment that will ultimately produce life long learners who are able to compete in a global economy.

My students have a passion for technology, and with the help of our school district, we have adopted new initiative to implement Computer Science within our Science Curriculum. We have partnered with a great organization, Project GUTS (Growing Up Thinking Scientifically) to introduce the aspect of coding, to middle schools students.

Students will have the opportunity to conduct scientific research here in our school and around the community. They will learn to use technology to explore real-world problems and analyze them with scientific tools. Lastly, students will have a chance to share their experiments and findings to advise local decision-makers and inform fellow students.

In Their Own Words

As students of the 21st century, our goal is to learn to create computer models from scratch. We are excited to make connections in problem solving and mathematical thinking during each lesson. Having access to Chromebooks, in our classrooms for paired programming would increase our knowledge in the area of computer science.

We will use this leadership opportunity to recruit more students, who are interested in the field of Computer Science. We would like to offer additional activities to our peers, and even create a Computer Science club at our school. If we work together with our Teachers, we can help others see the importance for the appropriate technology and resources for our school building. All students at BMS should have the opportunity to learn basic computer science skills. This skill set is important, and will assist us in getting a job in the future.

This project will address the stereotype of minorities in the field of Computer Science. Our mission is to prepare students for future endeavors in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) by providing them with opportunities to build scientific inquiry skills and use technology to explore, an solve real-world problem in our community.
