My Students
Students today have an opportunity to voice their opinions and showcase their work and ideas through classroom blogging. I would like for my students to be more than consumers of information, but to voice what they are thinking and to showcase the creative work that they do in school.
I teach fifth grade in a public school classroom.
Currently there are 23 students in my class. About 1/2 of my students were in my fourth grade class last year. It is a happy active class full of children who enjoy learning and each other. They enjoy being creative and aspire to do their best at school. The children come from a variety of backgrounds, but it is mostly middle class, although our school qualifies as a moderate poverty school.
My students are proficient in using technology. We have the use of computers at various times throughout the day and week, however we do not have full-time student access to computers in my classroom. The students use the computers for school work, for researching and completing projects, and for creative activities. There is not enough access time do all that they would like to do on a computer. They would love to use computers throughout the day for a variety of reasons and that can be a problem when no computers are available.
My Project
In the "good old days" the work that a student would produce in a classroom would only be seen by the teacher and his or her classmates and parents, if they shared it with them. If a student was fortunate, maybe his work would be displayed on a bulletin board or his refrigerator at home. Today, a student can showcase her work and thinking to a much wider audience through blogging. Not only that, but their blogs can generate feedback and discussion through online questions and comments.
I have showcased my students' work in the past through my own personal classroom blog, but my students want to learn how to create and use their own blogs. We have begun the process through setting up accounts at edublog, a classroom blogging service. My students need to learn how to put their work on a blog and how to read and comment on other classmates' blogs. They also need time on a computer to do this work. These Chromebooks would give my students easy access to computers to complete this work.
Right now Lakeshore Learning and Google are providing teachers with a heavily discounted price of $99 for each Chromebook.
Chromebooks would be perfect for my classroom with their easy web-based interface, quick turn-on, and long battery life.
Having 5 Chromebooks in my classroom would make it easy to work with students in small groups and to give access to students so they can work on projects and spend the necessary time to create, write, and explore the benefits of classroom blogging.
